How OTP verification protects COD orders
Verify cash-on-delivery orders with a one-time code by SMS or WhatsApp to filter fake and mistaken orders: how it works, DLT rules and UX tips.

- An OTP proves the buyer controls the phone number and really wants the order
- Trigger it for every COD order or only for risky ones, and measure delivered orders
- SMS needs DLT registration in India, and WhatsApp needs approved authentication templates
Many returns start with an order that should never have been placed: a prank, a mistaken click, a wrong number. A one-time password (OTP) sent after checkout filters these out before you pay to ship them.
How it works
- The customer places a COD order.
- You send a short code to their phone by SMS or WhatsApp.
- They enter it on a confirmation page, or reply to the message.
- Only then is the order released for packing.
If the code is never entered within a time limit, the order is held or cancelled and the customer is reminded.
Why it helps
- It confirms the phone number is real and reachable, which matters because couriers need to call.
- It adds a small moment of intent, so impulse and fake orders fall away.
- It gives you a chance to confirm the address in the same flow.
When to use it
- Every COD order: simplest and most effective for new brands.
- Risk-based: only for first-time customers, high-value orders or high-RTO pincodes. This protects conversion for trusted repeat buyers.
Compare delivered orders and net profit before and after, not just the number of confirmed orders (measuring RTO).
SMS vs WhatsApp
| SMS | ||
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Almost everyone | People with WhatsApp (very high in India) |
| Rules in India | DLT registration of sender and templates is required for commercial SMS | Approved authentication template under the WhatsApp Business Platform |
| Cost | Per message, varies by provider | Meta lists India authentication messages at ₹0.115 each (checked 7 October 2026), plus any provider fee |
| Experience | Plain text | Familiar chat, can include buttons |

UX tips
- Keep the message short: "Your OTP to confirm order #1042 is 4819. Valid for 10 minutes."
- Allow resend after a short delay and a way to correct the phone number.
- Show a clear confirmation screen, and send an order confirmation afterwards.
- Make it accessible: large input boxes, numeric keyboard, and support for auto-fill from messages.
- Never include more than the code and order reference. Do not put sensitive data in the message.
Privacy and consent
You are using the customer's phone number for a specific purpose, so say so in your privacy policy. Use it only for what you told them. See DPDP for online stores.
What to do next
Pilot OTP verification on COD orders for two weeks. Compare delivered-order rates and cancellations against the previous two weeks, and keep it if net delivered orders rise.
Frequently asked questions
Will OTP verification lower my sales?
It adds a step, so some people drop off, but it removes mostly orders that would have returned. Judge it by delivered orders and profit.
What if the customer does not receive the code?
Offer resend, check the number for typos and provide a WhatsApp or phone fallback so a genuine buyer is not lost.
Is OTP needed for prepaid orders?
Usually not, because the payment itself confirms intent, and payment authentication already involves its own OTP.
