Key takeaways
  • Product schema is code that labels your price, availability, brand and rating so machines can read them
  • It can make you eligible for rich results, but it does not guarantee them
  • Mark up only what is visible on the page, and never invent reviews

Search engines read the words on your page, but they have to guess which number is the price and which is the discount. Structured data removes the guesswork by labelling things in a standard vocabulary (schema.org).

What it gives you

  • Eligibility for rich results that can show price, stock and ratings in search.
  • Better understanding of your products by search engines and AI assistants.
  • Data that shopping features can use.

It does not guarantee any ranking or special display, and search engines can choose to show or ignore it.

The format

The recommended format is JSON-LD, a small block of data in the page's HTML. A simple product example:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Product",
  "name": "Handloom khadi saree, indigo",
  "image": ["https://example.com/images/indigo-khadi-saree.jpg"],
  "description": "Handwoven khadi saree in natural indigo.",
  "sku": "KHD-IND-01",
  "brand": { "@type": "Brand", "name": "Khadi Elegance" },
  "offers": {
    "@type": "Offer",
    "url": "https://example.com/products/indigo-khadi-saree",
    "priceCurrency": "INR",
    "price": "4900",
    "availability": "https://schema.org/InStock",
    "itemCondition": "https://schema.org/NewCondition"
  }
}

The fields that matter most

offers: price, priceCurrency, availabilityPowers price and stock displays

The rules

  1. Match the visible page. The price in the markup must equal the price on the page.
  2. Keep it current. Update availability when stock changes.
  3. Use real reviews only. Marking up invented or irrelevant reviews can lead to penalties.
  4. One product per page for product pages. Collections need different markup.
  5. Do not add hidden text only for machines.

How to add it

Many platforms generate this automatically. Stores on Orvexa include Product and Offer markup with price and availability. If you add it by hand, put the JSON-LD in the page head or body.

Test it

Use Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. Fix errors first, then warnings. Check a few products after any theme or platform change, because updates can break markup.

Pair it with good content

Structured data supports clear pages, it does not replace them. Write helpful descriptions (guide) and keep your pages fast. AI assistants also read structured data when assembling answers (getting suggested by AI).

Common errors and how to fix them

  • Price mismatch: the markup says ₹4,900 but the page shows a sale price. Update the markup whenever the visible price changes.
  • Missing availability: add InStock or OutOfStock so shoppers see the right status.
  • Wrong currency: use INR for rupees, and match the currency on the page.
  • Missing image: include at least one crawlable image URL.
  • Variants: if a product has sizes or colours with different prices or stock, mark up the offers accurately rather than repeating one price for all.

What to do next

Run your best-selling product page through the Rich Results Test. If price or availability is missing, fix that before anything else.

Frequently asked questions

Will schema make me rank higher?

Not directly. It helps search engines understand and display your product, which can improve clicks, but ranking depends on many factors.

Do I need developer skills?

Not usually. Most platforms and plugins add it for you. Check the output with a testing tool.

Can I mark up reviews from other websites?

No. Only mark up reviews that you collect on your own site and that customers can see on the page.
